Georgian Cut Steel Buckle Necklace.
This lovely Oval Georgian Cut Steel buckle has been transformed into a beautiful necklace.
The buckle measures 1.5" x 1.25" (4cm x 3cm) and hangs from a lightly oxidised 18" (46cm) silver belcher chain. The refracted surface of cut steel lead to it sometimes being called poor man's diamonds.
Production of Cut Steel is thought to have begun in the 16thC. From 1750 decorative pieces began to appear, as "Stars for the nobility" jewellery and hair adornments among the designs and often combined with precious jewels . In the late 18thC a Birmingham manufacturer began major production creating cut steel shoe buckles to adorn the shoes of Georgian men and women.
All Badger's Velvet jewellery is unique. It is made using vintage pieces sourced around the world , re-purposed by one of our two jewellers creating beautiful contemporary pieces.
